Can I Hire a Witness for My Registry Office Wedding in Australia?
Yes — and we make it easy. If you're eloping at the Registry Office in Melbourne, Brisbane, or Pyrmont (Sydney) and need legal wedding witnesses, we can help. At I Do Drive Thru, we provide friendly, reliable, professional witnesses for hire — so you can focus on getting married, not chasing strangers on the street.

Why Do I Need Witnesses for a Registry Wedding?
Australian marriage law requires two adult witnesses to be present at the ceremony to:
Watch the ceremony
Sign the legal marriage certificates
They must be over 18 and able to understand what’s happening — but they don’t need to be Australian citizens or people you know.
What If I Don’t Know Anyone in the City?
You're not alone. Many couples travel to Melbourne, Brisbane, or Pyrmont for simple elopements or destination registry weddings. You might not have friends or family nearby — or you simply want privacy.
That’s where we come in.
The easiest way to get married is to hire one of our Celebrants and we can provide witnesses for your ceremony, but some couples have already booked at the Registry Office and then they find out they need two witnesses for their wedding – this can be a difficult task for couples that truly want to elope.

How to Hire Legal Witnesses for a Registry Office Elopement
We’ve made the process simple and stress-free:
Step 1: Contact Us
Tell us your wedding date, ceremony time, and which registry office you’re booked into (Melbourne CBD, Brisbane CBD, or Pyrmont). We’ll check availability ASAP.
Step 2: Book Your Witnesses
Each witness is $220 (our standalone price with no other services-it’s cheaper if you hire one of our Celebrants). You'll need two witnesses for a legal ceremony.
We’re punctual, respectful, and experienced — and yes, we’re happy to smile in your photos! Alternatively, you can hire one of our Photographers and they will act as a witness for free then you can hire an additional witness for just $120.
Step 3: Enjoy Your Wedding Day
No awkward favours. No last-minute stress. Your witnesses will meet you at the venue and handle everything seamlessly.
Real Story: Emma & Luis (Brisbane Registry Office)
Emma and Luis flew into Brisbane for a no-fuss wedding and forgot about the witness requirement — until 11pm the night before.
“We were Googling ‘can strangers be my wedding witnesses?’ and panicking,” Emma told us later.
They found us just in time.
Instead of begging their Airbnb host or tapping people on the shoulder at the Botanic Gardens, they woke up knowing everything was handled — and were legally married with a smile and zero stress.
Where Do You Offer Witnesses for Hire?
We currently provide legal wedding witnesses in:
Melbourne Registry Office (Spring Street)
Brisbane Registry Office (Ann Street)
Pyrmont Registry Office (NSW Births, Deaths & Marriages)
Need a witness elsewhere? Ask us — we may be able to help!
Can You Be Witnesses for Other Elopements Too?
Yes! If you’re working with a celebrant (including one of ours) or doing a legals-only elopement in a park, Airbnb, or rooftop, we can still supply witnesses for just $120
Just let us know your plan.
