Frequently Asked Questions
How do we legally elope in Australia?
Book an authorised marriage celebrant (that’s us), lodge your NOIM (Notice of Intended Marriage) at least one month before your wedding date, show us some ID, and have two witnesses aged 18+ present at the ceremony and we will handle the legal wording and paperwork on the day.
What’s included in an I Do Drive Thru elopement package?
Our base package includes a government-authorised celebrant, all legal paperwork, and a short, sweet ceremony (2–7 minutes). You can add a professional photographer, witnesses, and other extras if you like.
How much does it cost?
Packages start from $400 for a legal ceremony with a celebrant. Popular add-ons include a photographer (from $400–$500) and professional witnesses ($120 each). Ask for a quote for your city and date.
Can tourists or non-residents get married in Australia?
Yes! You don’t need to be an Australian citizen or resident. Bring your passport (and any required divorce/death certificates). If you’re overseas when signing the NOIM, you can have it witnessed by a Notary Public.
Where can we have the ceremony? Do we need a permit?
Anywhere meaningful—parks, beaches, laneways, rooftops, backyards or even in your car. Many public places are free; some councils/venues require a permit depending on time, setup, or guest numbers. We’ll advise what’s needed for your spot, or you can check our Blog posts for suggested locations near you that are free of charge!.
Can you provide witnesses if it’s just the two of us?
Absolutely. We can arrange professional witnesses (from $120 each) in Melbourne, Sydney (incl. Pyrmont), Brisbane, Adelaide and more. Just let us know in advance.
How long does the ceremony take? Can we add vows and rings?
The legal ceremony can be as quick as 2 minutes. You can keep it registry-style or add personal vows and a ring exchange—totally your call.
What happens if it rains?
No stress—we’ll pivot. Options include moving under cover (gazebo, verandah, rotunda), choosing a nearby indoor/covered location, or even marrying in your car. We’ll confirm a Plan B with you beforehand.
How soon can we get married? Is there any way to shorten the one-month notice?
The standard notice is one month from lodging the NOIM. In limited circumstances, a prescribed authority may approve a Shortening of Time (e.g., travel, medical, work/military, or other compassionate reasons). It’s not guaranteed, but we’ll guide you on applying if eligible.
When do we get the official marriage certificate and can we change our names?
Your celebrant registers the marriage after the ceremony. You then order the official marriage certificate from your local BDM (online or by mail) we will show you how, basically every couple in Australia ends up with two marriage certificates. Many organisations accept that certificate for name change—check each provider’s requirements.
How many guests can we have?
Our base package includes up to 10 guests, our other packages have up to 25 or up to 150 guests. And yes, children are included in the guest count (but babies held in arms are not included in the guest count).
