Dandenong Ranges Elopement Celebrants

Celebrant & Photographer Packages · Fern Gullies · Waterfalls · Cosy Pubs · From $400 · 7 Days a Week

The Dandenong Ranges are one of the most popular elopement locations in Victoria — an hour from Melbourne and a world away from it. In summer our couples wade into fern gullies in gumboots to get married beside waterfalls. In winter they get married by the fire at a cosy pub and sign the paperwork over lunch. Both are perfect. Neither requires a venue package or a minimum spend.

Two Completely Different Seasons. Both Extraordinary.

The Dandenong Ranges work all year round — which is one of the things that makes them special. The question is not whether to elope here, it is which version of the Dandenongs you want.

🌿 Summer — Fern Gullies, Creeks and Waterfalls

It is always cooler in the hills. In summer the fern gullies are lush, the creeks are running, and the forest light through the mountain ash is extraordinary. Our summer couples wear gumboots, trek into the gullies, and get married beside a waterfall with nobody else around. Salt of the earth people with a genuine connection to nature. Some of our favourite ceremonies happen exactly like this.

🔥 Winter — Cosy Pubs, Restaurants and Airbnbs

The Dandenongs in winter are one of the cosiest places in Victoria. Misty mornings, wood fires, and the kind of quiet that only exists in the hills. In winter our couples get married at a lookout over the fog, sign the paperwork in a pub by the fire, and have lunch while the rain falls outside. The Dandenongs are genuinely Melbourne's most popular winter elopement destination — and we have been coming here for years.

Where We Will Marry You in the Dandenong Ranges

Our celebrants are locals who know every corner of the Dandenongs. Here are the locations our couples choose most — and a few the tourists never find.

🌸 Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens
Stunning · All seasons

A lake, three islands, a heritage boathouse, tall timber, ducks, and some of the most beautiful garden photography in the Dandenongs. Alfred Nicholas Gardens in Sherbrooke is simply extraordinary — a bowl of lush garden with a mirror-still lake at the centre. Particularly magical in autumn when the deciduous trees turn gold and red. Entry fee applies.

🌲 Sherbrooke Forest
Forest · Lyrebirds · Magical

One of the most magnificent forests in Victoria — thousand year old mountain ash, lyrebirds, deep fern gullies, and a small waterfall to get married in front of. Get married amongst the trees and then head into the forest for portraits. If a lyrebird calls during the ceremony, that is genuinely good luck.

💧 Olinda Falls
Waterfall · Public · Free

One of Melbourne's most accessible waterfalls — a low but steady fall surrounded by deep forest, with a fire pit and picnic tables nearby for a small celebration after. Wonderfully quiet on weekdays. Free to access. A picnic after the ceremony here is one of those genuinely perfect afternoons.

🔭 5 Ways Lookout, Kalorama
Views · Panoramic · Drive up

At the intersection of five roads in Kalorama sits one of the best panoramic lookouts in the Dandenongs — sweeping views of the ranges and the Silvan Reservoir. Drive right up and stay in the car, or step out and get married amongst the trees at the edge of the view. One of our most beloved Dandenongs ceremony spots.

🌿 Emerald Lake Park
Family-friendly · Accessible

Beautiful parkland around the lake in Emerald — lovely walking tracks, lake views, and a relaxed, accessible setting perfect for couples with children, elderly guests, or anyone who wants the Dandenongs without the bush trek. Puffing Billy runs nearby for a wonderful post-ceremony adventure.

🐉 Giant Dragon's Nests, Olinda
Hidden gem · Off the beaten track

Deep in the Olinda forest, artists have woven enormous dragon's nest structures from branches and sticks — completely private, completely extraordinary, and known only to locals. Completely off the beaten track and one of the most magical ceremony spots in the entire Dandenong Ranges. Our celebrants know exactly where to find them.

🍺 A Dandenongs Pub or Restaurant
Winter favourite · Cosy

In winter this is how it is done. The Micawber Tavern in Belgrave has a gorgeous meandering creek out the back with outdoor seating — pull up a table, sign the paperwork, ceremony done, frothy in hand. The Dandenongs villages of Sassafras, Olinda, Kallista, and Belgrave all have beautiful pubs, tearooms and restaurants that welcome small ceremonies before a meal.

🏡 Your Airbnb or Accommodation
Private · Perfect wet-weather backup

The Dandenongs has some of the most beautiful Airbnbs and holiday rentals in Victoria — heritage cottages, forest retreats, and hillside gardens that are ready-made ceremony settings. Elope on-site at your accommodation with the forest as your backdrop. Also the perfect wet weather backup if you have planned an outdoor location.

🔭 Burke's Lookout, Mt Dandenong
City views · Drive up

Stunning views of Melbourne's city skyline from the forested ridge of Mount Dandenong. Get married in amongst the trees near the carpark, then stroll to the lookout as newlyweds. Perfect at dusk when the city lights begin to appear below.

🌊 Fern Gullies and Creeks
Summer · Nature lovers · Gumboots welcome

The deep fern gullies throughout Sherbrooke, Menzies Creek, and the Kokoda Track Memorial Walk are extraordinary in summer — cool, green, and completely away from the world. Our nature-loving couples wear gumboots, tuck their dress into their wellies, and get married beside a creek in the middle of the forest. It is genuinely one of our favourite things.

How It Works in the Dandenong Ranges

1
Book online — tell us the season and the vibe

Fern gully in summer? Pub by the fire in winter? Alfred Nicholas Gardens in autumn? Tell us what you are imagining and we will match you with the perfect local celebrant. Not sure? Tell us the season and we will suggest locations based on conditions.

2
Lodge your NOIM — we handle it

We send you the Notice of Intended Marriage and lodge it with BDM Victoria on your behalf. Must be lodged at least one month before the ceremony. Book first, sort the NOIM straight away, and by your day everything is in order.

3
Zoom with your Dandenongs celebrant

Meet your celebrant before the day. Confirm the location, discuss the walk in if you are doing a bush ceremony, and sort any ceremony details. Your celebrant will advise on conditions, permits (most public locations need none for small ceremonies), and wet weather options.

4
Get married. Certificate on the day.

Your celebrant meets you at your chosen location. Two to seven minutes later you are legally married in Victoria. Presentation certificate on the day. Marriage registered with BDM Victoria within 14 days. Lunch — or a long walk in the forest — immediately after.

The Dandenongs Are For a Particular Kind of Couple.

They are not precious about their shoes. They prefer a fire and a schooner to a styled reception. They chose the Dandenongs because they love the bush and the quiet, not because they saw it on Instagram. They might have a dog. They almost certainly have strong opinions about good coffee. They want a ceremony that actually feels like them — in a forest, by a waterfall, or at a table by the fire. These are our favourite people and the Dandenongs were made for them.

All love. Always. From Belgrave to Olinda and deep into the forest.

🌿 Acknowledgement of Country
We acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Kulin Nation as the Traditional Custodians of the Dandenong Ranges and the land on which we marry our couples. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

🇦🇺 Australian Owned · Women Led
I Do Drive Thru is an Australian-owned, women-led small business founded in Melbourne in 2020. Our Dandenong Ranges team are locals — they know the forests, the pubs, the gardens, and the hidden spots. They have been marrying couples out here since we launched.

✅ Locals who know the secret spots
The Giant Dragon's Nests, the quiet waterfall at Olinda, the creek at the Micawber — these are not on Google Maps. Our celebrants know where they are and will get you there. This is the difference between booking a local and booking a stranger.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to elope in the Dandenong Ranges?

I Do Drive Thru Dandenong Ranges elopements start from $400 on Tight Ass Tuesday. Standard weekday celebrant from $550. Weekend from $650. Add a photographer from $400. Travel fees apply as our celebrants are Melbourne-based — ask for an exact quote when booking. Witnesses supplied at $120 each if needed. NOIM lodgement included.

What is the best time of year to elope in the Dandenong Ranges?

Every season works beautifully but very differently. Summer is for fern gully and waterfall ceremonies — always cooler in the hills. Autumn is spectacular at Alfred Nicholas Gardens when the trees turn gold and red. Winter is cosy pub fires, misty lookouts, and Airbnb ceremonies with the forest outside. Spring brings new growth and wildflowers throughout the bush. The Dandenongs are genuinely one of very few places in Victoria that are equally beautiful in all four seasons.

Do we need a permit to get married in the Dandenong Ranges?

For small ceremonies up to 15 guests on public land in the Yarra Ranges Shire, no permit is required. Alfred Nicholas Gardens charges an entry fee. SkyHigh Mt Dandenong charges a full wedding venue fee — we tend to steer couples towards the equally beautiful free alternatives nearby. Your celebrant will advise on any permit requirements for your specific location during your Zoom call.

Can we get married in a fern gully or beside a waterfall?

Yes — and this is one of our most beloved Dandenongs ceremony styles. Olinda Falls, the creek through Sherbrooke Forest, and the deep fern gullies throughout the ranges are all accessible for small ceremonies. Wear good shoes — gumboots are genuinely recommended and our celebrants love a couple who comes prepared. Best in summer when the ferns are lush and the creeks are running well.

Can we get married at Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens?

Yes — Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens in Sherbrooke is one of our most popular Dandenongs ceremony locations. Entry fee applies. The lake, boathouse, islands, and heritage timber create some of the most beautiful ceremony and portrait settings in Victoria. Particularly stunning in autumn. Small ceremonies with guests up to 15 generally do not require a separate events permit — confirm with your celebrant for your group size.

How far is the Dandenong Ranges from Melbourne?

About 35–50km from Melbourne CBD depending on your destination — roughly 45 minutes to an hour. Belgrave and Emerald are closest. Olinda, Sassafras and Kallista are a little further into the ranges. Sherbrooke Forest and Alfred Nicholas Gardens are about 45 minutes from the city. Easy for a day trip from Melbourne — and our celebrants come from Melbourne so travel fees apply.
